Bruce Butgereit

Bruce Bernard Butgereit, Class of 1977 Bruce is a local business owner but is more well-known as an historian in the Grand Rapids area and elsewhere in Michigan.
Not satisfied with just learning about events of the past, Bruce has offered professional living history programs on the American Civil War to schools and museums for over twenty-five years. Going a step further, Bruce has coordinated the restoration of several Civil War monuments in Michigan, including the 1885 Kent County Civil War monument in Grand Rapids and the Michigan monument at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Bruce is a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, serving as the state Commander. He also has served as the local Camp Commander, state Department Commander, and both national Patriotic Instructor and Memorials Officer in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Bruce also received the Cornelius F. Whitehouse Outstanding Brother Award from the SUVCW. Bruce and his wife were the first joint recipients of the Baxter Award from the Grand Rapids Historical Society for their historical work locally. |
