Kelsey Hines
2012
Kelsey Hines, an alumna of East Kentwood High School's Class of 2012, is a dedicated advocate for immigrant rights, driven by a profound sense of empathy and compassion. Her journey began at East Kentwood High School, where she was deeply impacted by the school's diverse student body. This early exposure to different cultures fostered a global perspective and a commitment to social justice.
Kelsey's passion for justice led her to pursue a career in law. She gained invaluable experience working at various immigration law firms and non-profit organizations in the Twin Cities and New York City before founding Hines Immigration Law, PLLC, two and a half years ago. Her firm provides compassionate, client-centered, and trauma-informed legal representation to individuals navigating the complexities of the U.S. immigration system, specializing in removal defense, asylum, refugee petitions, and other immigration-related matters. Her clients come from diverse countries across the globe and often include educators, activists, and community organizers who have fled persecution and violence in their homelands. Kelsey's commitment to social justice extends beyond her legal work; she actively volunteers with organizations supporting immigrants and refugees, such as the Minnesota Detention Project, the Immigration and Human Rights Clinic, and the Advocates for Human Rights’ Afghan Legal Clinic. She also actively serves in mentorship roles and chairs several committees within local immigrants' rights groups. She credits East Kentwood with instilling in her the values of diversity and understanding. Kelsey's story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have in creating a more just and compassionate world. One of Kelsey's most cherished memories from Kentwood involves celebrating the naturalization of her elementary school friends at Explorer Elementary. "I remember coming home to my mom: ‘I want to become a citizen, too!!’" she recalls. This seemingly simple childhood experience has become a poignant reminder for Kelsey, highlighting the importance of celebrating diversity and fostering a sense of shared humanity. Looking towards the future, Kelsey remains committed to amplifying historically marginalized voices and working towards a more just world.
