Dr. Kristy Pilbeam, an outstanding alumna of East Kentwood High School from the Class of 2000, has crafted a remarkable journey marked by academic excellence, athletic prowess, and a profound commitment to pediatric hematology-oncology. Graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pittsburgh in 2004, Dr. Pilbeam played Division I soccer for four years while studying Political Science and Cultural Studies with a focus on Latin American and Western European studies. Her academic achievements earned her membership in the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Post-graduation, she delved into immunology research at the Starzl TransplantInstitute, publishing on unique populations of natural killer cells. Embarking on her medical career, Dr. Pilbeam attended Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine from 2007 to 2011, followed by a residency in Pediatrics at Advocate Christ Medical Center, Hope Children’s Hospital in Chicago from 2011 to 2014. Her passion for research led her to a fellowship at the University of Minnesota, Masonic Children’s Hospital from 2014 to 2017, where she focused on pediatric sarcoma, publishing on new translational therapies for both pediatric and canine sarcomas. Dr. Pilbeam has also served on medical missions in Central America. Dr. Pilbeam accepted her initial attending position in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Indiana University, Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, IN. During her tenure, she served as the department medical student and resident director, assuming the role of a fellowship mentor. Her responsibilities extended to working on new early-phase clinical trials for pediatric cancer. In March 2021, Dr. Pilbeam moved back to Grand Rapids and currently serves as a hematologist- oncologist at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI, and holds the position of Assistant Professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Her career focus centers on pediatric sarcoma, solid tumors, and histiocytic disorders, and she serves as the Director of Vascular Anomalies. In her role, Dr. Pilbeam is dedicated to patient care and teaching the next generation of physicians. Married to husband Jo Godoy, Dr. Pilbeam is raising her family in Bryon Center, MI, with their three children, a daughter and twin toddler boys. |
